Huricane Helene
9/30
FEMA Update:
Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) assistance is now available to Pinellas County residents who experienced damages/losses due to Hurricane Helene. Disaster assistance may include financial help for temporary lodging, basic home repairs and other disaster-caused expenses. Eligible residents can apply online at DisasterAssistance.gov, using the FEMA app, or by phone at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362).
Make sure contractors you hire are licensed – unlicensed or fraudulent contractors often target desperate homeowners in the aftermath of hurricanes. Learn more at pinellas.gov/choosing-a-contractor and verify contractors are licensed at contractorsearch.pcclb.com.
Cooling stations are open in areas where residents remain without power following Hurricane Helene. These stations will provide a place for residents to cool off and charge their phones. These locations can be found at disaster.pinellas.gov.
For the latest recovery and resource information, go to disaster.pinellas.gov.
Additionally, from the Board of Directors:
Further information will become available on Regattabeachclub.net
Again, please carefully, post-hurricane environments are littered with hazards.
Harbeck Hospitality

The Boards choice for restoration company will start work this morning. An initial assessment and planning was developed yesterday around 5pm when Barrier Island access was made possible. Today, the plan will be to dry out the Pump Room, dewater Elevator Pits and tap into the building power grid with a portable generator. The center elevator being a primary goal. City sanitation lines are required to facilitate RBC plumbing needs and the return of water services.
First Choice will be the major player in this phase of the restoration efforts. Their know-how with this scale of disaster recovery has been proven through numerous catastrophic weather events throughout Florida and the Eastern Seaboard. They bring technology with the ability to create certifiable documentation widely accepted by all key insurance organizations, which will garner rapid turnover of funding from FEMA through Disaster Recovery Programs.
After a close evaluation yesterday, we realized the enormous feat we will accomplish. The strength of Regatta's structure withstood a violent weather event. And, with the leadership of the Board of Directors, we will withstand the rigors ahead and stay steady on a clear course to those beautiful Calidesi Sunsets.
Please be safe, post-hurricane environments are littered with hazards.

Sea Turtle Season Begins May 1st
From May 1st through October 31st, Loggerhead Sea turtles successfully nest and hatch along the beaches of St. Petersburg and Clearwater. With over 20 miles of shoreline, our area is prime real estate for turtle nests. Female turtles come ashore in the dark, dig a hole and lay 100 to 150 eggs at a time. During the course of a season, a single female lays three to eight nests. After a 45 to 70 day gestation period, hatchlings emerge from the nest at night and follow the moonlight reflecting off the Gulf.
Sea turtles can be disoriented by lights visible from the beach causing hatchlings to become attracted inland. When this happens, they most often die of dehydration, predators or are run over by motor vehicles. Occupants of beachfront properties are asked to minimize the use of lights that shine directly on the beach side.
Information about turtle friendly beach lighting from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission can be found on the links below.

RBC Community Herb Garden
We welcome another great addition to our shared amenities.. a community herb garden! In cleaning up and improving the courtyard area, we noticed that the large ugly brown painted cement flower pots were more of a distraction than complementary. Our landscaper gave us a quote of over $5,000 to replant the pots professionally. Instead, we decided to move several pots to an area where they would serve as a community garden for those wishing to plant herbs or small garden vegetables in one spot. With fresh terracotta paint, new garden soil, and a rock bed to cover the muddy ground behind the older grills.. the community garden was born. We thank Julie for taking so much of her volunteer time and donated plants to make this beautiful herb garden that all of us can enjoy.. one snip at a time!

New and Improved RBC Private and Protected Beach
For years, invasive species have taken over our beaches.. as a result they have clogged our drains causing damage to our building structure, parking lot and surrounding areas. Invasive plant roots made their way over the seawall resulting in roots growing under our paver blocks and cracks through our valuable sea wall, causing even more costly damage. In an attempt to clear our drainage area, we succeeded in creating a draining system that began to work. Now.. the invasive plants are again taking over the dunes and sea wall. Beginning April 16th, and now permitted and working with the FDEP we will begin to remove any and all invasive plants from in front of our beach property. Subsequently, in following weeks, we will start to plant native plants listed below. We are asking that our residents and guests keep off of these area's and respect the ongoing improvements that we continue to make to our prized and highly valued location. ~ on behalf of the BOD Jac Fleming

Water Drainage
With old buildings, there are always great challenges. But the BOD is committed to commit to their fiduciary duty to maintain our property. Thank you Wayne for your submission of the drain design that shows how our drain system extends through our property to the seawall.
~ Flooding in Parking Lot making it hazardous for residents to access their vehicles
~ Flooding under the building garage and maintenance area destroying building foundation
~ Recent sink hole in parking lot on South corner causing damage to vehicle
~ No drainage from patio deck, leaving black grease stains on pavers
~ Standing water increased mosquito population during heavy rain months
~ Water pressure on Sea Wall has created cracking in need of repair. (Total replacement could be as much as $250,000)

Welcome neighbors and friends
It has been a busy few weeks for our building and association. We are fortunate now to have high efficiency Air Conditioning working in our hallways and common area’s after an unusually warm end of the summer. We are also enjoying the addition of two new grills in a secondary location. We have made great progress in improving our living space and facilities.
There is a lot of work that remains in front of us. Examples are: Looming deadlines for our fire safety system, a deteriorating pier/boardwalk, and a required shutdown of the use of the pool as daylight abates. These are just some of the major decisions and considerations we have to make with a tight budget in mind.
I am very pleased that the BOD will continue to make use of membership surveys to give our entire association a voice in how our association and building is managed. Often times the loudest voice in the room does not always represent the sentiment of the whole. Thank you to all who spends hours of your personal time to contribute to our community.

This argument has been asked of the City of Clearwater on numerous occasions. - Do not pick sea oats, not even the seeds. Picking sea oats is illegal in Florida and will result in a fine.
- Do not walk or drive a vehicle of any sort over dunes or sea oats. Sea oats are easily destroyed and sand dunes damaged by any kind of traffic, even foot traffic.
- If you walk your dog on northern Clearwater Beach, observe leash laws and never let your dog run loose—especially over sand dunes. Dogs can destroy sea oats and sand dunes as well as disturb nesting shorebirds.

Some times the lights are left on and it can be very bothersome to your neighbors. We are also in turtle nesting season so we want to ensure we are not interfering with any of the turtle nest that may be hatching.
Check Your Balcony Lights
Lighting can affect sea turtles in two ways. When mother sea turtles crawl up the beach to nest, they do so at night while it is dark out, relying on the moon to guide their crawl up the beach to nest and back to the water. If the brightest light around them is not the moon, but instead a light, the turtle is in danger of “disorienting,” meaning she crawls out of her way before returning back to the water. We have had some turtles crawl the wrong way for as many as sixty meters due to disorienting lights.
Second, when the hatchlings emerge from their nest, they use the brightest light (which should be the moon) to find their way to the water. Hatchlings are already in danger of being trapped in holes dug on the beach, by sand castles, in dunes, and of being snatched up by predators on their dash to the water. In addition to all these factors, many hatchlings will crawl the wrong way due to bright lights on the street or on balconies and homes and end die before they ever reach the water. Sea turtles already have an extremely low survival rate— only about 1 in 1,000 hatchlings will survive to adulthood. By turning your lights off, you can provide the hatchlings with the best chance possible to reach the water. You can also knock down sand castles and fill large holes, this does help!
By FWC guidelines, we are supposed to cage as few nests as possible. For those who are not familiar, caging means that you literally place a cage over the nest to trap the hatchlings and ensure they do not crawl the wrong way, but this is more human intervention than we’d like. FWC would like to demonstrate that humans are negatively affecting the sea turtles by leaving their lights on, so this summer especially, it’s important to turn your lights off! We work very hard to patrol each day and mark every nest, so anything you can do to help keep the turtles safe would be greatly appreciated.
Lastly, some of you may know that the sea turtle nesting patrol done through the Clearwater Marine Aquarium has recently lost its funding as it is no longer associated with the aquarium. Twenty-six miles of beach must still be patrolled each morning to mark nests and document false crawls; however, now all supplies are being bought out of pocket and there are no vehicles to use— so each volunteer is patrolling on foot. If you would like to know more about this issue, you can email mgergoudis@gwu.edu, and if you would like to donate to help save the sea turtles, you can visit this link: https://www.gofundme.com/sea-turtle-patrol-supplies-help

Readers voted online on 10 nominations submitted by "Dr. Beach" — aka Florida International University professor and coastal expert Stephen P. Leatherman. Nearly 30,000 votes were received, and Clearwater was a clear winner with more than 25% of the tally, followed by Siesta Key, Cocoa Beach and Sanibel Island.

Winter worth billions
The total local economic impact of "Dolphin Tale", a motion picture featuring the Clearwater Marine Aquarium and its most-famous resident, could approach $5 billion between 2012 and 2016.
By the end of that period, attendance at CMA could reach 2.4 million visitors and 4,000 new jobs could be created. A new animal care area scheduled to open within a month could "...almost double or triple the number of animals we can take care of," Yates said. ~ Steve Nichols |

Changed topography of Clearwater Beach blamed for dangerous currents
Breaks in the shoreline are a new addition to the topography of Clearwater Beach after large storms churn up the sand. The beach north may have several breaks in the shoreline allowing water to flow in and flow out from a trough that formed behind the shoreline.

What Is an AED Automated External Defibrillator?
An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a portable device that checks the heart rhythm. If needed, it can send an electric shock to the heart to try to restore a normal rhythm. AEDs are used to treat sudden cardiac arrest (SCA).
SCA is a condition in which the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops beating. When this happens, blood stops flowing to the brain and other vital organs.
SCA usually causes death if it's not treated within minutes. In fact, each minute of SCA leads to a 10 percent reduction in survival. Using an AED on a person who is having SCA may save the person's life.
More Information on AED can be found here: http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/health-topics/topics/aed/

Help Build the History... Submit your photo's!
There is nothing more enlightening and refreshing that a little bit of nostalgia. Certainly there have been very good times at Clearwater Beach and the Regatta Beach Club. We are very interested in your story. Not long ago, we found a nice story about when Hollywood Came to the Regatta Beach Club and filmed the movie "Sunday Dinner for a Soldier" The movie was filmed partly on the original foundation that was being build in the 1920's as a Kipling Hotel. It is pretty interesting to see the foundation of the ballroom of the "old hotel" in the film.
A poor family in Florida saves all the money they can in order to plan something special for the soldier they've invited to Sunday dinner. They don't realize that their request to invite the soldier never got mailed. On the day of the scheduled dinner, another soldier is brought to their home and love soon blossoms between him and Tessa, the young woman who runs the home.
